the wangfujiang hu tong is a tourist attraction - but it also has real people working and living. Several families share a single "bathroom" = a hole in the groun or a pot.

a peek inside the ancient hu tongs (alleyways) of Beijing.

I finally felt that I accomplished the first step in getting to know a city - I found food that I LOVE! I found an onion bun that is deep in the hu tong -away from the tourists. give me another month and I'll find all the best restaurants.
