Before You Move to NYC, Check out Google Maps: New York City Murders

Overall Murder Rate of NYC

Witz has linked to the The New York Time's interactive Google Maps that shows murders in NYC between 2003 and 2005 by location/borough. According to these maps, I live and work in the highest murder rates areas: Bronx-Hunts Point and Brooklyn-Bed-Stuy.

Keep in mind, the murder capital of New York State is not NYC!! It is taaa daaaaa.....Rochester!

Murder Rate /100,000 people in 2005

  • Rochester: 25.41%

  • Buffalo: 19.79%

  • Syracuse: 13.27%

  • New York City: 6.6%

The things is you have to break down the statistics in NYC by borough and by neighborhoods within the boroughs to get an accurate picture of the crime level. Tourists will NEVER be in a high crime area. Unless you work in East New York, Hunts Point, Bed-Stuy or Jamaica for example - you will never even have a 0.000000000000009% chance of coming across a violent crime. But I think this map is cool b.c maybe we deter gentrification in Bed-Stuy if we show all the bourgeoisie light colored skin folks the high murder rate.
